St Brigid Uganda Seminarian Ministry

Category: Parish News, Uganda Ministry,

Fr. Charles Ssennyondo was ordained a priest in 2003 in Uganda and came to the USA in 2009 to study at St Mary of the Lake Seminary for a Doctorate degree.  While he studied for the next 3 years, he lived at the Our Lady of Humility rectory as a Priest-in-Residence.  While he was here a committee was formed to support St Andrew Kaggwa sub-parish in Nattita, Uganda (his childhood home). They had a very tiny church building and a large congregation, so money was raised and sent via the Archdiocese.  The Mission: Nattita committee worked on this side of the globe, while the people of St Andrew worked on their side.  The new church was dedicated in Aug 2011.  Fr Charles received his Doctorate in 2012 and returned to Uganda.

On one of his visits back to Lake County in 2017, he was asked if there was anything else we could do, and he said that some seminarians from the Kasana-Luweero Diocese were dropping out of the seminary because they could not afford the fees.  Because of this the Uganda Seminarian Ministry was born.

There are two types of financial support.

  • Sponsorship in which an individual here sponsors an individual seminarian there paying $600 per year until he is ordained. They communicate via e-mail.
  • Greatest Need Fund in which a person here can contribute to an annual general fund for those in greatest need. The Vocations Team in Uganda determines how the money is distributed.

Once a year we do an appeal on Good Shepherd Sunday {also known as Vocations Sunday}. This year it is April 21, 2024. The money is collected here and put in the parish bank account, then one check is sent to the Propagation of the Faith office in Chicago, which then electronically transfers the money to Kasana-Luweero Diocese in time for the fall semester.

Since 2017 there have been 24 priests ordained for the Kasana-Luweero Diocese. They currently have 48 seminarians in 5 seminaries in Uganda.

Please use the colored envelopes at the entrances at both church sites if you wish to sponsor. Mark which donation option you wish.  If you select sponsorship, please include your email so that we can send you information on a seminarian. Colored envelopes can be put in the collection basket or brought to the parish offices.
